We should all “be about our Father’s business” as echoed in Luke 2:49. The 21st Chapter of John’s Gospel is written as an epilogue. After the resurrection and ascension, the disciples find themselves slipping back into their old lives. Jesus appears to them and challenges them, as he often does, through a series of questions designed to have the disciples question the decisions they were making. Jesus’s miracles are to authenticate the message, and the miracle he performed for the exhausted and defeated fishermen, having them cast their nets to the other side and fill them with fish, is no different.
Jesus anticipates our needs, even the small ones, and He has hot coals, fish, and bread waiting for the disciples when they joined Him. Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” (John 21:15 NKJV). The “these” He was referring to are the fishing nets. The disciples had slipped back into their old lives, the lives they had dropped and left behind to follow Jesus. Instead of going back to those old lives, they should have “been about their father’s business.”
