In the closing of the 19th Chapter of John’s Gospel we see scripture fulfilled. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the law, a law that was given to show us that we could not live up to it, that we needed a savior. They cast lots for his clothing, and not a bone was broken. The common practice with Roman crucifixion was to break the legs of the condemned so they would suffocate; however, they saw that Jesus was dead and pierced his side instead. The sword went through his body and into His heart, cutting through the pericardium, where blood and water spilled out. This proved two things, 1) it provided Jesus’s humanity, that He was a flesh and blood human, while being fully God. And 2) that Jesus was truly dead, he was not sleeping or in a coma. In the garden, God put Adam to sleep and opened up his side to remove the bride, Eve.
Jesus, as the second Adam, is put into the sleep of death and pierced for the Bride of Christ. (the church)
