We are commanded to be obedient to authority, even in times where it does not make sense to us. In Acts Chapter 9 we are told a story about the obedience of Phillip the Evangelist. Phillip had a thriving ministry, many came to the Lord and were baptized. However, the Lord called Phillip away from that ministry and into the desert to minister to one man. As much as a command to leave his thriving ministry and risk his life to traverse the desert in the hottest part of the day didn’t make sense at the time, Phillip was obedient. God was only revealing the next steps to Phillip and not the whole plan. But Philip was faithful, and when he met the Ethiopian, it was at the exact right time to open the door for ministry.
The Ethiopian was reading Isiah 53:7-8 a section of scripture which was widely misunderstood at the time, but which points to and speaks of the coming Christ. Because Philip was obedient and left exactly at the time the Lord commanded, it afforded him the opportunity to speak to the Ethiopian about Jesus, and it moved his Heart and he was baptized. The Lord re-arranges circumstances and events to His plan for our lives. We must be obedient to the Lord to take advantage of the circumstances He has intricately laid out in our lives. We are to also serve our employers as we serve the Lord. The things we are asked to do may not always make sense to us at the time, but there is often a greater plan being worked out that we are unaware of.
