Do you know the Lord’s prayer? Most people, when asked this question, will repeat the ubiquitous “Our Father” prayer Matthew 6:9-13. This prayer Jesus instructs us how we should pray. So this is really more of the Disciples Prayer.
In the Gospel of John, Chapter 17, Jesus looks towards the heavens and prays, for the cross is iminent. This is the Lord’s prayer in the sense that it is the prayer of our Lord. To read this Gospel is to hear the Lord pray for us!
In verses 1-5 Jesus prays for Himself, the He may be glorified and, in that, the Father should be glorified. The Son shows perfect obedience to the Father, the Father shows mercy on us for our sins, and thus to all of us is given eternal life.
In verses 6-19, Jesus prays for His disciples. He prays that the disciples are one just as the Father and the Son are one.
Finally, in verses 20-25, Jesus prays for all believers, that they may also experience unity and glorify Jesus and God.
