In the Word, Live! The Gospel of John Chapter 19 pt. 1

228 0

In the nineteenth Chapter of John we are beginning to see how Jesus is the fulfillment of scripture. A crown of thorns was placed on Jesus’s head. Back in Genesis 3 the original curse for man’s sin was that the ground would produce thorns and thistles, and that man would work the ground by the sweat of his brow, Jesus is taking that curse from us with the blood of his brow. They placed a purple robe around him to mock him, the color of royalty, but also the color created by the combination of blue and red. The blue of heaven and red of blood, Jesus symbolically bearing man’s sin. Jesus was silent has he was tortured and scourged, as he was taking punishment meant for us. Cattle need to be driven; however, sheep are led, and Jesus went to the cross, a cross that was to be for Barabbas, to be the replacement for our sins willingly. The unblemished, perfect, and innocent lamb went to the cross while the guilty Barabbas walked free.

The place where He is to be crucified is called Golgotha, the place of the skull. In first Samuel we hear of Goliath from Goth…Golgotha. After David slays Goliath, he cuts off his head and brings it to Saul. The place, Golgotha, is where that skull was buried. The skull of evil overcome by David through faith and obedience in God, a picture of how Jesus would conquer sin and death once and for all in the very same place.
